One can't go five feet on the internet without someone going on about how magical functional programming is. Languages like Haskell, Clojure, and F# dominate the lamentations of people who go on about monads and side-effect-free code. It's almost like the poets of the romantic era have come back to life to torture us with their cries of how backwards the industry has become. But real code needs to ship against real deadlines, and no one has the resources to simply pitch their existing code bases and rewrite everything in Haskell.
Is it just hype? Or are there practical ideas that we can take right now and apply to our projects to ship our products faster and with higher quality?
